Stirling Looking Odds On To Claim Victory

Published in:

Donald Stirling is four shots clear heading into the last 18 holes of the PGA Senior Club Professional Championship after another excellent round at Northants County.

Stirling, who is the professional at Wien-Sussenbrunn in Austria, carded another 69 in difficult conditions to remain in the lead after 36 holes.

"I'm happy with my round again, I played well. On the first I holed a six foot putt for par after chipping out of the rough and it seemed to kick-start my round," he said.

"I adopted a more conservative approach to my game this round and apart from the last three holes, where I scored two bogeys, it worked well.

"But I'm not setting a target score for the last round, I'll just continue playing the same way and see if that will be enough to win the tournament."

Bearsden Golf Range's Garry Harvey, who scored a sizzling four-under-par 66, and Gordon Townhill of Brough are in joint second place.

Harvey said: "I'm delighted to have made the cut and shot a 66. My first round was up and down, but my second round was much better. I never hit my driver as I stuck to my three wood and it worked well.

"The conditions were much easier on the course than the first day, and the wind was much calmer, although it was still tricky, especially if the wind was blowing from left to right."

Chesterfield Golf Club's Michael McLean, who is three-over-par, was frustrated after three successive bogeys at the sixth, seventh and eighth forced him to settle for a 72.

"I could have shot a 69 if I hadn't dropped those shots, but that's golf, it's all ifs and buts really," he said.
