Stirling Recovers From Poor Start To Clinch Title

Published in:

Donald Stirling won the PGA Senior Club Professional Championship after recovering from a blip in his final round at Northants County.

Stirling, who is the professional at Wien-Sussenbrunn in Austria, looked like he was going to blow his chance to claim the title when bogeys at the first, fourth, sixth and seventh reduced his lead.

However, the 52-year-old, who led from the first day, regained his composure and after a birdie at the ninth, he went on to card a 73 and win the tournament by five shots.

Bramhall Golf Club professional Richard Green and Garry Harvey of Bearsden Golf Range were joint second, while Brough's Gordon Townhill finished fourth.

Stirling, who will now collect the £4,750 winner's cheque, said: "I feel like I had to win the tournament twice. I didn't think I would do it after
my poor start, so I'm delighted to have clinched the win. It is something I will remember for a long time.

"I didn't hit a proper shot until the eighth, but I birdied the ninth - which was like grabbing a goal before half-time when you are 3-0 down - and that seemed to steady me again.

"I then played some excellent golf on the back nine, although I didn't realise until the 16th that I had such a big lead. When I saw the leaderboard there, it was like releasing a pressure valve."

Green, who scored an impressive 69 in his final day, said: "I'm pleased with how I finished the tournament. I played well and it was tough out there, especially because I knew I had a chance to secure a top five finish.

"I just want to continue playing as much golf as I can now after a year out due to a back injury."

But Townhill was disappointed after he failed to give Stirling a real run for his money.

"I wasted a lot of shots in my final round, and never really got my game together, although it was tricky out there again due to the wind," he said.

"However, I've enjoyed my week and to be coming down the back nine with a chance of winning a tournament is always good."
