Former PGA Assistants' champion, David Orr, out in the first three-ball at 7am, swept to the top of the leaderboard with a halfway total of 140 in the Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championship.
The 33-year-old East Renfrewshire trainee who drives taxis to supplement his income, steered his way round the tough PGA Centenary course in a four-under 69 to set a formidable target for the rest of the 132-strong field.
"I've a wife and a two-year-old son to support", said David, "So the taxi money comes in handy. In fact Rona (his wife) is going into hospital today for her 20-week pregnancy scan of our second child, so I'll get down the road (to Glasgow) to keep her company."
Orr's game is improving with each nine holes at Gleneagles. He has played his last 27 holes in nine under par, and missed only one fairway during his second round, a feat credited to his new Wilson Staff driver which he'd just picked from the company's factory in Irvine.
"I'm averaging about 290 yards off the tee, and that's pretty satisfying. Even better, the ball's landing near the middle of most fairways."
Orr has an impressive record in the championship - the last twice he's competed (in 2002 and last year) he's been runner-up and tied third.
