Dodd Cruises To Cardiff Victory

Published in:

European Tour pro Stephen Dodd showed his true class as he won the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh National PGA Championship at Cardiff Golf Club by eight shots.

The 41-year-old started the final day four shots ahead of joint-second placed duo Paul Collins and Peter Evans and never looked like he was going to be caught as he cruised round the course with a second successive 64 to card a 10-under par total for the Championship.

The Welshman's appearance in the Championship was only confirmed last week, and his inclusion in the 113-strong field added some glamour to the event, which was being held at Cardiff for the first time since 1988.

It's the second event on home soil that Dodd was won in the past month after he edged out Ian Derbyshire in a tense play-off at the Welsh Open at Marriott St. Pierre on August 9.

Dodd started slowly and only made two birdies on the opening nine, but stepped it up on the back nine and plundered four birdies.

"I just kept the ball in play and did the right things which is key round here I think," said Dodd.

"The fairways are pretty narrow and it's pretty demanding off the tee so I just kept it straight.

"It's always a challenge to hit it straight and there are enough chances out there to post a decent score.

"It's nice to win and hopefully it will give me a bit of confidence to finish the year off in a decent bit of form."

A long way behind in second place was Dodd's playing partner on the final day, Evans, and he admits he was inspired by the "elegant" stroke play of his partner as he posted a two-under par score for the week.

"I was nervous to start as it was the first time I've played in two months," said the Royal Porthcawl pro.

"But to play with an old friend of mine and to see him play with such elegance, grace, touch and class was a real treat and it did inspire me.

"The desire to play the game is as strong as it ever was and I don't think there was one particular part that was special this week. I just played with a big heart and enjoyed playing on this wonderful golf course."

Local favourite Adam Constable, playing on his home course, had played a crucial part in Wednesday's thrilling day when he broke Dodd's freshly-set course record of 64 with a stunning eight-under round of 62 just hours later.

And he continued his great form as he ended his Championship on a high with a round of one-under par to finish level for the Championship along with Caerphilly's James Lee and Matthew Griffiths.

Caerphilly golfer Griffiths enjoyed a super final round of 65 to shoot up the leaderboard.

The 27-year-old was one under after nine holes, but produced an explosive finish which included birdies on the last three holes.

"I was out in one under and had a good back nine," he said.

"I've been pretty solid all week - I shot a 69 in the Pro-Am to come second and then 72 and 73 in the last two days and then it all came together nicely today."

The Welsh Assistant Professional prize was split between Alexander James of Royal St David's and Lee Harpin from North Wales.

Winner of the Welsh Seniors Championship was John Barnett of Royal St David's after he was the only senior to make the cut.
