Lupton Has Mountain To Climb

Published in:

England’s Jonathan Lupton hopes of adding the Australian Futures title to his name look to have faded. The 28-year-old is still riding high in a share of fourth place but a disappointing third round 73 at Melbourne’s Sandhurst Golf Club has left him with a mountain to climb as he sits nine shots adrift of leader Alex Simpson. Middlesbrough assistant Lupton, the reigning PGA Powerade Assistants champion, is tied in fourth with Kai D McKay who fired a three under 69. Leader Simpson moved in top spot at 12 under par courtesy of a 68 which included six birdies and two bogies. Brent McCullough is two shots back with defending champion Julian Reynolds at five under and seemingly denied the fairytale of claiming three successive Futures titles. Simpson, last years’ New South Wales Trainee Champion and a runner-up at the 2007 Victorian Trainee Championships continued his brilliant form which has netted him 14 birdies and two eagles for the tournament and a strong chance of pocketing $8,000 dollars in prize money. The winner of the 2007 Futures event will also get a start in the Cadbury Schweppes Australian PGA Championship.
