A cancer charity is set for a major boost thanks to an ambitious plan to fly the Ryder Cup to every golf club in Wales.
The famous trophy, accompanied by PGA captain Parnell Reilly, will be flown by helicopter to all 158 golf clubs in the space of six days in the build-up to May's Wales Open at Celtic Manor Resort.
It's hoped the eye catching idea will highlight the work of Tenovus - the official charity of Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd. - and also encourage Welsh clubs to adopt Tenovus as their nominated charity for 2009.
As an added incentive the 10 clubs that raise the most money will each receive two VIP tickets to the 2010 Ryder Cup.
The whistle-stop tour will also promote the Tenovus Challenge in which every Welsh club will be invited to host a special competition in a bid to create a world record for the most competitors playing simultaneously.
The epic journey in a Eurocopter Twin Squirrel will begin in Cardiff on May 26 and end at the Celtic Manor on the final day of the Wales Open on June 1st.
Claudia McVie, chief executive of Tenovus, said: "We are absolutely delighted to be the chosen charity for Ryder Cup Wales 2010 as this is a fantastic opportunity for us to get our messages heard and provide a huge boost to our fundraising campaigns.
"Attention grabbing ideas like flying the trophy to golf clubs across Wales will encourage the clubs to get behind us and also attract wider support for our work.
"Every day in Wales 23 people are diagnosed with cancer and the money we raise through our association with the Ryder Cup will allow us to continue our work supporting those who are affected by cancer, as well as continuing our research into cancer treatments, cures and preventions."
Ahead of the planned trip Yorkshire-based Reilly said: "It's just a great idea and fantastic way to support the Tenovus charity and give golf clubs the unique experience of having the Ryder Cup delivered to their doorstep.
"I've had one or two rides in a helicopter before but we'll be visiting something like 30 clubs a day so it's going to be tiring but I'm sure the adrenaline will keep us going."
Rob Holt, chief executive of Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd, said: "This is a great chance for Welsh golf fans to see the iconic trophy on home turf before September comes and I urge them to turn out to support their local club and, of course, Tenovus."
The event will generate funds towards equipping mobile units designed to deliver chemotherapy, healthchecks, financial support and research throughout Wales.
The joint initiative between The PGA, Ryder Cup Wales 2010, Tenovus and the Golf Union of Wales (GUW) is part of a series of golfing activities planned in the build up the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor.
