Tottey Targets Defending Champ

Published in:

North Wales' Matthew Tottey has defending champion Adam Constable firmly in his sights when the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship is held later this month.

Constable has won the event for the last two years, and 12 months ago he carded a blistering eight under par opening round to leave the rest of the field fighting for second place in the 36-hole event.

Tottey won that race but finished trailing in Constable's wake, eight shots behind at Aberdovey.

The tournament moves to Bull Bay in Anglesey on April 24 and 25 and it is virtually a home event for Tottey, whose parents live 20 minutes away in Llanfair PG. And he is hoping to use that to his advantage in order to end Constable's reign.

"He has got the better of me the last couple of years - last year he was fantastic," said Tottey, who is now based in Llandudno.

"He had a great score and I didn't hole anything for two rounds and didn't really compete.

"But this is a course I know quite well. My parents live just up the road and I used to play junior and county games there."

The 27-year-old has made some adjustments over the winter which he hopes will give him the chance to mount a sustained challenge over the 36 holes.

"I've made a few swing changes just to try to make things a bit more consistent," he said.

"But it is only a two-round tournament so it is more of a sprint and you have got to get off to a good start."

The tournament is the first on the national schedule and benefits from the support of Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd, who have increased prize money for the event to £12,500 - which has in turn attracted many more entries than last year.

Chester-based Nicholas Taylor finished two shots behind Tottey last year in a share of third and returns looking to improve.

"Adam is definitely the man to beat," said the 25-year-old third-year assistant who works at Fore Golf Discount.

"Although, it will be more difficult with more competition there but I'm pretty confident after my finish last year.

"And it's not far from here so I can get a practice round in before I tackle the tournament."

RCW 2010 Ltd chief executive Rob Holt added: "This tournament is the first event in our 2008 Summer of Golf programme which provides a great opportunity to put Anglesey on the map and to showcase the surrounding area of North Wales.

"Golf clubs up and down the country are benefiting from hosting such events which contribute greatly to Wales' growing profile as an international golfing and tourism destination."
