Constable Going For Three In A Row

Published in:

Two-time champion Adam Constable moves out of his comfort zone for the defence of his Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship title next week.

The Cardiff golfer has held a strong grip on the tournament, having won it in 2006 and 2007 in Aberdovey - a course he admits is one of his favourites.

However, Bull Bay in Anglesey is hosting the event this time around on April 24 and 25 and Constable will be at as much of a disadvantage as the rest of the field.

"It would be great to retain the title again. I love Aberdovey, it is a nice track and suits my eye, but it is a different course this year," said the 26-year-old.

"I've not played it before and that will be the case for most of the guys. It will be quite new to everyone. Hopefully we can get another Welsh winner."

The tournament has attracted a stronger field this year after Ryder Cup Wales increased prize money to £12,500 but Constable remains the player everyone will be looking to beat - a fact he is well aware of.

"There are a lot more entrants this year - I think the previous couple of years it has been 60 or 70 guys," he said.

"It is double that and I think the standard of golf will be a bit higher. I will have to raise my game."

Constable walked away with his second successive title last year after a first round eight-under-par 63 left his rivals playing for second place. He eventually won by eight strokes but does not expect a repeat performance.

"Last year I made it a bit easier by shooting the number I did in the first round but you can't always do that every time you peg it up," added Constable, who as part of his prize last year won an 18-hole masterclass with Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam.

"I took a bit from him; just to play your own game and not worry about what anyone else does."

One of those hoping to challenge Constable is Matthew Griffiths, of Oakdale Golf Club and driving range near Blackwood in Gwent.

"Adam will be the red-hot favourite but there are a lot of English contenders, many whose names I don't recognise," said the 28-year-old from Caerphilly.

Griffiths already has some form this season, winning the Titleist/Footjoy League event in Exeter a couple of weeks ago after shooting a 66.

And he believes that is just a continuation of how last year ended.

"Overall I had a really good season last year, especially the back end of the season," he added.

"I was third in the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh National PGA Championship in Cardiff after shooting 65 in the last round.

"I won the Tour Championship on the Celtic Pro Tour at Marriott St Pierre at eight under, which was a good one for me.

"I was also the leading money winner in the Order of Merit. But I'll wait and see what the Bull Bay course holds."

The tournament is the first on the national schedule and benefits from the support of Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd.

Chief executive Rob Holt said: "This tournament is the first event in our 2008 Summer of Golf programme which provides a great opportunity to put Anglesey on the map and to showcase the surrounding area of North Wales.

"Golf clubs up and down the country are benefiting from hosting such events which contribute greatly to Wales' growing profile as an international golfing and tourism destination."
