Bully for Bull Bay

Published in:

Bull Bay - Wales' most northerly golf club - are bullish at raising Anglesey's reputation as a golfing destination on the back of staging the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship.

The club will be flying the flag for the region when more than 100 top professionals from across Great Britain and Ireland battle for the title and a share of the £12,500 prize fund.

But aside from the tournament, which launches Ryder Cup Wales' summer of golf, Bull Bay will be promoting the sport and the region with a range of initiatives 24 hours ahead of the 36-hole tournament, which tees of April 24.

The highlights include 50 children from the peninsula getting a taste of the game and some pointers from the professionals via Tri-Golf, a 'mini' version of the game aimed at introducing and encouraging school children of all ages to golf.

In addition, an Anglesey County team will also benefit from extra tuition from the professionals before a 19-team pro-am will allow others to savour the delights of the course.

Bull Bay director of golf and PGA professional John Burns has spent the past three years working toward this triumphant moment, having embarked on a mission to raise the profile of the club and Anglesey.

"I was made manager three years and at that time I told the committee I wanted to raise the profile of the club," he said.

"Through a series of meetings and working hard we have secured the biggest event this club has ever staged.

"This has increased the profile of the club, especially with the effort of Ryder Cup Wales 2010.

"We're hoping this will show Bull Bay in all its glory and what a little gem of a course there is on Anglesey.

"But this will also promote the whole island of Anglesey as a golfing destination because there are four 18 hole and three nine hole courses here."

Burns and the rest of the team at Bull Bay are putting the finishing touches to the course ahead of the event, which he admits is a mouth-watering prospect.
"With the activities and the pro-am we're aiming to show that there is plenty going on in Anglesey," he said.

"We've put a lot of hard work in and still are to make sure this is a success not just for us but for all of Anglesey.

"The Tri-Golf is going to see 50 kids coming here from across the island and having a go at the sport. It's a great opportunity for all involved and to show that even though we're in the middle of nowhere there's a lot going on here.

"The county team will also be here for a bit of coaching and that's another good bit of PR, while the pro-am is also a great chance for us to get the message out about us and of the course the work of Ryder Cup Wales, who have made this possible."

Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd chief executive Rob Holt added: "It is fantastic that this event has attracted a record number of entries this year from some of the best young golfers around the UK. Bull Bay provides a spectacular backdrop and a challenging test of golf which will further promote Anglesey and Wales as a top golfing and tourist destination."
