Wilton Ready To Make Bid For Bahrain Again

Published in:

Less than two months after playing in the Grand Final of the Gulf Air International Pro-Captain Challenge, supported by BMW, in Bahrain London professional David Wilton will be out on the course trying to qualify for a return trip.

Wilton, of Muswell Hill, won the event in 2006 but with no automatic route back to the final for the defending champion he had to re-qualify 12 months ago.

He successfully achieved that and although Wilton and his amateur partner Vico Battaglio could not retain the title, the 40-year-old is ready to repeat the whole process once again to book their place in the luxury event in the Middle East.

"It is a great trip so we definitely want to make it and do well," said Wilton, who will be playing with his 19-handicap captain Peter Moruzzi.

"But it is all about doing it on the day. To beat a field of whatever number people you have to have a few bits going for you.

"You play well and literally hope for the best."

Wilton said success was often down to the performance of the captain, which in turn was usually dependent on how they coped with the additional pressure.

"In this competition the main thing is usually how your captain plays," he said.

"If they are nervous at playing with two professionals in a fourball it can be a bit daunting but you can only do so much preparation."

Having won the event two years ago and qualified for the 2007 final Wilton admits there is a little bit of pressure on him and Moruzzi, who will go out in the first group at Sandy Lodge Golf Club near Rickmansworth on April 24.

"Having been there, there is that little extra that makes you want to make it again because it is such a good trip," he added.

"There is some extra edge to it but if you qualify you can't really lose. We came last in the final but we were still winners."

Someone else who is more than familiar with the Grand Final in Bahrain is Sandy Lodge host professional Jeff Pinsent.

He and then captain Alan Hart came within two shots of winning the 36-hole event in 2004 after a final round eight-under 64.

And although the 45-year-old does not play as much as he used to, he will go out intent on winning on his home track alongside club captain Clive Lander, an 11 handicapper.

"I hardly play at all but we will try to win it," said Pinsent, the East Region captain who has been at Sandy Lodge for 15 years.

"I got through to Bahrain four years ago and it is a great week. I don't think the captain's often realise what a good prize they are playing for.

"Clive will get a few shots, which might make it a bit easier."

Pinsent added: "It is nice for the club to be hosting because we haven't held a PGA event for a number of years so it is good to get back into things."

The winners of the qualifier will book their place on a luxury trip to the Middle East at the end of the year, which begins by being chauffeur driven to the airport and includes a stay in a five-star hotel with the 36-hole final being played at the The Royal Golf Club in Bahrain.

Each of the PGA's seven regions provides one pair for the final, which is supplemented by the host club's professional and captain and the winners of an international qualifier.
