Ryder Cup Wales 2010 launched their sizzling summer of golf at Anglesey's Bull Bay Golf Club this week with a few potential golf stars of the future.
A dozen of Anglesey's young county players aided by PGA professionals Mark Henderson and Alex James, plus 60 of the island's school kids teed off the Principality's golfing year at the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship.
The two professionals, from nearby Royal St David's Golf Club, conducted a Champions Clinic, which saw a range of short game skills put to the test in a competitive format with a few useful tips passed on to the talented youngsters.
Among those taking part were eight-year-old Daniel Blight, who has previously had a lesson with eight-time European Order of Merit winner Colin Montgomerie, Kieran Warriner - who was celebrating his 10th birthday, and teenager Scott Fenwick, who has qualified for the Junior Wales Open at Celtic Manor in August.
Randall Richards, Anglesey Golf Union junior organiser, said: "Having this opportunity means everything to us and the lads."
The initiative had been organised by Golf Development Wales, a partnership born as a result of the successful Ryder Cup 2010 bid.
It was also responsible for staging the Tri-Golf taster which saw youngsters from Amlwch, Rhosybol and Llannerchymedd primary schools get a fun-filled introduction to the sport.
Organiser Dilwyn Griffiths of the Golf Development North Wales office said: "We have done a lot with Tri-Golf on Anglesey as two years ago we staged the largest ever indoor Tri-Golf festival in Amlwch, which raised a lot of interest.
"Tri-Golf works because it's the not perception they have of golf as it's incredibly colourful with the emphasis on having lots of fun. The ability to give 60 kids a go at a golf club is great as it also helps break down the perceived barriers.
"From today we're looking to continue raising the interest through this initiative and with regards to the county team we're fortunate to have got four sponsors from the island, which has allowed us to secure extra funding via the Sports Match scheme to aid junior golf development."
The Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship is one three PGA national tournaments backed by Ryder Cup Wales 2010 and one of seven top class events in the Principality.
This year's 36-hole event at Bull Bay has attracted a full field of professionals from around Great Britain & Ireland chasing the title and share of the £12,500 prize fund.
Rob Holt, Chief Executive of Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd, commented, "The Tri-Golf festival provided the youngsters with a taste of the fun that can be had on the golf course, as well as encouraging them to participate in a lifelong sport that can be played at any age.
"The Young Professionals event at Bull Bay has attracted record number of entries this year which is fantastic for golf and tourism in Anglesey and I'd like to thank the North West Wales Events Commission and the Isle of Anglesey County Council for their support which has made it possible for us to bring the event to the most northerly course in Wales."
