Record-Breaker Dixon Clinches Cornish Festival

Published in:

European Tour player David Dixon shattered the tournament record to win the Waverley TBS Cornish Riviera Festival with what he described as "awesome" golf.

The Bristol-based big-hitter from Somerset closed the PGA West Region event with an exhilarating seven-under-par 64 at Trevose after successive rounds of two-under 67 at the tougher, trickier links at St Enodoc and Newquay.

His 11-under-total of 198 left runner-up Lee Thompson (Dudsbury) floundering nine shots behind. His impressive return was three shots better than the previous festival record set by Martyn Thompson (Parkstone) four years earlier.

"After having three weeks off the Tour, this was the perfect way to prepare for a run of three successive events in Spain, Italy and Ireland," said the powerful 31-year-old from Bridgwater.

"I've had a stop-start season on Tour and have only played six events but I am feeling really up for it and I intend to take advantage of the good start I have made to secure my card for next season.

"We're coming into a busy time of the season and I must take advantage of the opportunities I've got and not squander what I have achieved so far."

Thompson expressed surprise at his high finish. "I have only played in the Bournemouth Alliance meetings once a month so far," he said, although he has qualified for the Europro Tour in the qualifying school at Frilford Heath.

"I didn't expect a huge amount this week playing against a few of the other guys who play full time. But it went well although I found it difficult putting in the wind at St Enodoc on the last day.

"It was tough and windy. I had 17 pars and dropped my only shot when I bogeyed the par three 17th. You don't get many good chances for birdies in the wind in that course."

Exminster Golf Centre pro Jonathan Langmead loves playing golf in Cornwall and his playing partners have also taken a shine to the trio of links courses.

For they collected the team prize for the fifth time. The defining round was on the final day at Newquay where scoring had been difficult in spite of the immaculate presentation of the course.

Stover members Andy Beazley, Robert Vooght and Jason Hampton returned 12-under-par 126 to be by far the best of the 114 teams.

Exeter's Chris Gill, fresh from setting a new course record on his home course, took third place in the individual on one-under-par 208 (66 72 70).

He said: "I struggled a bit on the greens but overall played nicely. I had a good game plan all the week and this is a good way to warm up for the season ahead."

Last year's joint winner Paul Jones (Canford Magna) was amazed to finish fourth as he took 13 more shots than Dixon.

Langmead, a dominant figure in Devon golf since his young days at Stover, made a "horrible" start to his final round at Newquay and started with a triple-bogey seven and followed with a double.

It says much for powers of recovery that he ended on four-over 73 after opening with 69 and 70. It was good enough to take him into a share of fifth place on 212 with fellow Devon players Barry Austin (Downes Crediton) and Paul Hendriksen (Fingle Glen).
