Tokley Fights Back Twice To Land Victory

Published in:

Andrew Tokley carried off the inaugural Suffolk PGA Winter matchplay title at Rushmere Golf Club.

The Stoke by Nayland pro came from two behind early on in both his semi-final against Stuart Robertson (Ufford Park) and in the final against Paul Wilby (Fynn Valley).

Tokley, now fully qualified and with PGA Europro Tour experience, played steady golf with occasional flashes of inspiration which won him the day.

In the final, Wilby won the first and third holes and seemed in control. He lost the par three eighth and then Tokley produced an eagle at the par five ninth to be all square at the turn.

Wilby regained his advantage at the 10th but Tokley levelled at the 11th when Wilby's approach shot flew out of bounds. Tokley had his nose in front after the 12th and then chipped in for a birdie from a bunker at the 13th to go two up.

Wilby hit back with an exquisite bunker shot to reduce the deficit at the Pond Hole only to have a wayward drive at the 14th that ended in a small gorse bush.

The long 16th was halved and Wilby, now dormie two down, kept the game alive with a 25 foot birdie putt on the 17th.

It was all to play for on the last. Tokley's approach shot ended pin high off the green to the left. Wilby was forced to take a drop from gorse behind the green so it was virtually all over and they were soon shaking hands.

In the semi-final Wilby claimed the scalp of European Seniors Tour player Robin Mann on the last green.

Wilby went ahead with a birdie at the first. Mann drew level in the 17th but then missed a five foot par putt on the 18th to prevent the tie going to extra holes.
There was little to choose between Robertson and Tokley in the other semi-final.

Tokley sunk a testing long putt on the sixth to reduce the deficit to one and was level at the turn.

Robertson's tremendous approach shot at the 12th should have restored his lead but he missed the short birdie putt.

Robertson's putting then proved costly as he lost three holes in succession. It was soon all over.

This new format to provide winter golf for Suffolk professionals started with 32 players in a pre-set draw similar to Wimbledon. Each round was scheduled to be 36-holes home and away to provide as much competition as possible.

Semi-finals: A Tokley (Stoke by Nayland) beat Stuart Robertson (Ufford Park) 3 and 2, Paul Wilby (Fynn Valley) beat Robin Mann (Felixstowe Golf Range) one up.
Final: Tokley beat Wilby two up.
