Trevor Jones (Hambrook) has become the new Gloucester and Somerset PGA strokeplay champion for the first time after an impressive five-under-par return of 102 for 27 holes at Oake Manor.
It brought a three-shot win in torrential rain that ultimately forced a two-hour delay due to flooded greens. PGA chairman David Haines and home professional James Smallacombe agreed that the first round should be completed and the second round reduced to nine holes.
Jones was delighted as he had compiled a bogey-free score of two-under for 14 completed holes and didn't want to see his good work go to waste. He returned to birdie the par five 15th and parred in to return a superb 67.
The additional nine were a composite of the drier holes. Jones, a former Chipping Sodbury amateur, added four further birdies to move to seven-under for the championship to win £400.
George Ryall and Mark Plummer, who both represent The Players Club, shared second place on 105 - Plummer 70, 35, Ryall 69, 36. Both collected £250.
Long time order of merit leader David Haines (Brean) secured his second title in three years despite finishing eighth in the final event.
He won by 12.5 points over Mark Sanders (Knowle) who blew his chances when he made a quadruple bogey at the 248-yard tenth hole.
To make matters worse Ryall pipped him for second place in the OOM by just 1.5 points as well. His sole consolation was winning the award as the leading trainee.
