Lee Gets Final Shot

Published in:

Newport's Brian Lee will get one more shot at the final of the Powerade PGA Assistants' Championship, in association with FootJoy, after finishing joint top in the West Region qualifier.

The 28-year-old has played at The London Club in the previous two years but as he has just completed his final PGA exams this will be the last time he will be eligible for the tournament.
He booked his place with a two-under-par round of 68 at Taunton Vale to finish level with Trevose's Grant Slater, although he was not entirely satisfied with his performance.

"It was an all right day. The main thing is to get through," said Lee, who is based at Parc Golf Academy.

"I didn't hit it very well off the tee but I kept it in play. I didn't pull the driver out many times.

"This will be my last attempt playing in the final and it was one of my aims for the year to get through to play at The London Club.

"I have just done my final exams and so next month I will find out if I can get elected as a member of the PGA.

"It has been a great experience to play in this tournament."

Midlands-based Paul Streeter, the PGA's current number one by virtue of him winning the Play-Offs, finished in a share of third after travelling across the country to play.

A packed schedule meant he was unable to enter the midlands qualifier so took his chances in the west.

"The midlands qualifier clashed with the Wales Open, which I qualified for by winning the Play-Offs, and this was the only one which didn't clash with something," said the 41-year-old, who had a three-and-a-half-hour drive each way.

A total of 15 players qualified from the 51-strong field, with Fingle Glen's Paul Hendriksen - who bogeyed his last hole in last year's final to lose by a stroke - carding a level-par 70 for a share of sixth.
