Love Affair Continues For Leicestershire Pro

Published in:

A Leicestershire pro rekindled his love affair with Little Aston to book a return ticket to Turkey and the grand final of Europe's largest pro-am.

A year after finishing sixth in the PGA National Pro-Am Championship showpiece, Longcliffe pro David Mee is heading back to the Mediterranean with amateur partner Ryan Brind after a blemish-free success over the picturesque Midlands course.

However, Mee admitted that it was Brind, who had played the decisive role in securing an instant return to Turkey and the Sirene Beach & Hotel Resort and Antalya Golf Club.

An eagle from the 21-year-old 13-handicapper at the 16th in edged them to a winning tally of eight-under-par 64 - one shot better than Moor Hall's Cameron Clark and Richard Quainton who were in the first group out.

Loncliffe's tally, which comprised six birdies and an eagle, was identical to the tally that saw Mee qualify with then partner Stephen Marlow.

"I think this place just suits my game," said the 41-year-old, who has been at the Leicestershire club for eight years.

"I'm not the longest hitter but I can hit it straight, which is what you need to do at Little Aston."

That's where his partner came in, with some decisive scores none more so at the 16th when Mee knew what score was needed for victory.

"We knew that Moor Hall were seven under before we went out. We managed to get to eight under at 16 and hoped it was enough.

"Ryan did most of the damage. He was great. I was just steady and when he was out of the hole I wasn't."

Mee revealed that reaching the grand final last year had also been a major incentive.
"I'm surprised but ecstatic after going their last year - it was a great trip," he said.

"You just want to go and do it again but following it up the next year is unbelievable.

"I think having been there last year makes you hungrier because you know what it's all about and I was more determined this year than last year.

"I've also got some unfinished business there. The first day we played well but didn't take any chances whatsoever. We shot six under the second day to haul ourselves up to sixth just four off the leaders. So had it not been for the first day you think you might just have won it.

"It's nice to have another go and I think we can do ourselves justice."

As for Brind, who has been playing golf five years, the win was a real boost having been made redundant from his double glazing job two months ago.

"I've just been made unemployed and it's been hard times so this is just fantastic news considering I've not got a job. It's really perked me up," he said.

"I really can't believe it. It was nice to play with such an accomplished and comfortable player.

"I personally didn't think I played that well. I didn't look at the scores until the 16th and Dave's telling me, 'We're doing alright here and you're going to get me a three nett two.

"I'm thinking 'no chance' but I did and then we parred the last two. It's just a big shock."

The winning pair will compete against 15 other regional finalists during the expenses paid five-day, five-star trip to the Sirene Beach & Hotel Resort on Turkey's Mediterranean Coast from November 30 to December 4.

The tournament, which attracts more than 100,000 entries, is now in its 24th staging and has been held in Portugal, Spain, Grand Bahamas and Sardinia prior to Turkey last year.
