Swinton Park Pair's Searing Front Nine Clinches Final Place

Published in:

An outward nine of just 26 strokes set up Swinton Park duo David Smith and amateur partner David Torkington for a convincing four-stroke victory in the North Region qualifier of the Gulf Air PGA Pro-Captain International Challenge, supported by BMW.

The pair finished 10-under-par - their score for the front nine - to beat Holywell's Matthew Parsley and captain Ian Smith, who were second on six under par.

But with only the winners making it through, the Swinton Park pair can now look forward to a trip to Bahrain later in the year for the grand final.

"We had a very, very good front nine where we dovetailed very well," said the 35-year-old professional, who three-putted the last for a par five at Huddersfield.

"And it could have been better as we missed three putts from five to eight feet. I had an eagle and three birdies while my captain set off nett birdie-birdie before a nett eagle on the ninth - which I had birdied first to give him a chance at it.

"After that we just had to be patient as, if at the start someone had said you are going to shoot 10 under, it does not matter how you do it. You just have to make sure you don't drop any shots - which we didn't."

Smith, whose 62-year-old partner is a nine handicapper, added: "I have just come out of a two-week spell of playing well but not scoring well and then I won a pro-am at Darlington on Sunday and so it is good to do well on the back of that.

"We have now got a nice trip to Bahrain to look forward to at the end of the year. I've played in Asia before but not the Middle East

The winning pair can now plan for a luxury trip to Bahrain which will begin with a chauffeur-driven ride to the airport and includes a stay at a five-star hotel during the final.
