Better Back Nine Decides Top Spot At Stapleford Park

Published in:

Danny Greenwood and Steve Bennett covered the back nine at Stapleford Park in just 31 strokes to top the midlands qualifier for the SkyCaddie PGA Fourball Championship, supported by Sunderland.

The pair had tied for the lead on 12 under with Daniel Taylor (Swingers Golf Centre) and William Barnes (RBE Golf) but won on a countback as their rivals could only come home in 33 at the Melton Mowbray venue.

However, the important thing was making it through to the final at Fulford in York in October and the top nine finishers all booked their places.

But it was Greenwood, from Forest Pines near Scunthorpe, and the 49-year-old Bennett, from Waltham Windmill near Grimsby, who topped the lot.

They birdied their first four holes and picked up further shots at the sixth and eighth, both par fours, to turn in six-under-par 30.

More birdies followed at five of the next six holes and a three at the 363-yard last proved crucial.

Barnes and Taylor went to the turn in just 28, with birdies at all but the 440-yard third, but coming home they could only pick up four strokes despite birdies at 10 and 12 and an eagle at the 519-yard 15th.

"We both played well and we worked it well so when one was struggling the other was doing the business," said the 34-year-old Greenwood, who has been at Forest Pines for 12 years.

"There was only one of the par fives where we both had five woods into the green for our third shots and I hit mine to three feet and holed it for birdie.

"We tend to do all right around this course and out of four attempts at qualifying we have made it twice, missing the cut first time in the final and finishing inside the top 20 last year.

"Now we are looking forward to the final at a great golf course. It is a nice end of the year tournament to play in."

Adam Pond and Kevin Crossland (both Worksop) were third on 10 under with, a shot further back, Ian Fulton (Belton Park) and Chris Huggins (Spalding) holding off 2006 champions Phil Edwards (Notts) and Barry Hurt (Bulwell), who in turn finished ahead of Darren Parris (North Foreland) and Mark Reynolds (Golf Centrum Noordvijk) on countbacks.

Paul Bagshaw (Ramsdale Park) and Craig Swinburn (Notts) were seventh on eight under and although there was a four-way tie on seven under for the two remaining places, two pairs did not attend the play-off as they had teed off much earlier in the day and could not return.

That meant Richard O'Hanlon (Lanhydrock) and Jonathan Craddock (Druid's Heath) and Tim Coxon (Mickleover) and Ian Walley (Shirland) progressed at the expense of Carl Sainsbury (Brampton Heath) and Nick Soto (Northamptonshire) and Alexander Stockton (Moor Hall) and Dean Lake (Lea Marston).
