Fingle Glen's Paul Hendriksen has more than one reason to be gunning for glory at the Powerade PGA Assistants' Championship, in association with FootJoy, which begins at The London Club today..
The 29-year-old wants to go one better than he did last year, when he finished runner-up by one shot, and is also aiming to emulate Ross Fisher, who won the European Open on the same course last month.
"It would be great to go one better this year," said Hendriksen. "Last year I bogeyed the last hole to miss out on a play-off which was disappointing.
"At the time though I didn't know what the situation was. I knew there was a guy playing behind me, Brett Taylor, who was playing well and I thought he would win it but when I saw the scoreboard at the end he had dropped right off on the back nine.
"I played every shot well on the last hole, I wasn't disappointed with the shots I hit. I just didn't make par, which was what I needed to do to stay in with a chance of winning."
Hendriksen added: "I knew Ross Fisher when we were both amateurs together and I watched him win the European Open a few weeks ago so it would be great to follow in his footsteps. It would be a good double for the two of us."
Although the assistant professional has a number of titles to his name this season, Hendriksen admits his year has been a little up and down.
He won the Dartmouth Pro-Am as well as three Devon PGA events at Yelverton, Teignmouth and Exeter, and has twice finished in the top 20 in PGA Europro Tour competitions - at Faithlegg and Wensum Valley.
"The season started well but I hit a bit of a bad patch," Hendriksen said.
"I had to work very hard at my game to get out of that slump and turn things around. It wasn't one thing in particular; it was a combination of things. Maybe I was just a little over-golfed. It can get very busy at certain times of the season when you maybe play too much.
"I've just had a week off from golf and it's been a nice break. I feel very refreshed now and really motivated to do well at the Assistants' Championship."
He added: "The course we play at The London Club is excellent. I really enjoyed playing it last time and I'm very much looking forward to going there again.
"Last year the greens were as good as any I've ever seen."
