Gill And Norman Power Into Finals

Published in:

There was a late finish at the west region qualifier for the SkyCaddie PGA Fourball Championship, supported by Sunderland, as a six-way play-off finally ended on the sixth extra hole.

With half a dozen pairs battling it out for the last two places at the championship at Fulford in October, Kevin Pitts and John Goymer and Iford pair Rod Davis and Tim Allen scraped through.

Woolacombe and Ilfracombe's Andrew Norman and his partner Chris Gill, of Exeter, eclipsed the rest at North Wilts Golf Club, however, shooting a 10-under-par 61 to win the event.

Guiseppe Licata and Trevor Jones, Andrew Sherbourne and David Hutton, and James Harraway and Jon Sutherland were the other pairs to qualify.

Gill said he and Norman had combined superbly for their impressive score.

"The pair of us played really nicely and gelled well," he said.

"I had one bogey and I think Andy had two but on the holes when one of us played badly the other one did well.

"We didn't birdie any of the same holes either which is always good.

"I haven't played the PGA Fourball Championship before so I'm really looking forward to it."

He added: "It's nice to play this format of golf actually. It makes a refreshing change from the norm and it's usually pretty relaxed and about having fun as well as doing well so there's less pressure."
