Woodman Powers To Victory

Published in:

East Berkshire's Guy Woodman clinched the Powerade PGA Assistants' Championship, in association with FootJoy, after carding a five-under-par 67 on the final day at The London Club.

Having started the tournament slowly with a five-over 77 in gale-force winds on the opening day, Woodman fought back with a six-under 66 on Thursday and an equally sublime round on the final day to finish four shots clear of last year's champion Jon Lupton, of Middlesbrough.

Irishman Michael Mulryan finished third on one under, while countryman Barrie Trainor came fourth, at level par.

Taking a one-shot lead into the last round, Woodman made a fantastic start, parring the first and then notching back-to-back birdies at two and three with good putts.

Another birdie followed at the par-five fifth after his eagle putt went close and he saw out the remainder of the front nine without dropping a shot.

He was just as impressive on the way back, keeping the momentum going with birdies at 12, 14 and 15, so a bogey on 18 was irrelevant.

Afterwards he admitted his overriding emotion was relief.

"I am more relieved than anything else," the 31-year-old said. "I've slept on a few overnight leads before and totally collapsed on the final day so I am really happy to have closed this one out.

"It's good to know I can do it. A few times I felt I was getting ahead of myself and had to reign myself in and just take it one shot at a time.

"Jon missed a couple of good chances around the turn which would have put some real pressure on me so it could have been different.

"Because he missed I was able to keep the momentum up which was really important."

In addition to the £5,000 prize money, Woodman wins a place in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth next May - something he admitted he is relishing.

"It'll be fantastic," he said. "It's up near my neck of the woods so it'll be great to be playing there in one of Europe's biggest events.

"It's what I aspire to and to test myself against the world's best players will be amazing.

"The prize money isn't bad either. I'm going to give that as a present to my credit card!"

"It's been a fantastic week. The course has been incredible and I'm delighted with the way I've played."
