Jones At The Double!

Published in:

It's all happening these days for Welsh National PGA champion Trevor Jones.

Along with work, swing analysis with his coach Mark Saunders, the Hambrook Driving Range professional has got married, been on honeymoon and poised to compete with Europe's elite at the Celtic Manor Wales Open on June 4.

Then there's just the small matter of qualifying for the for the flagship event for Britain and Ireland's top young professionals, the Powerade PGA Assistants' Championship in association with FootJoy.

The 26-year-old will stake his claim when he tees up at the West Region qualifier being staged at Taunton Vale on Monday June 8.

Jones, Cyprus-born but Welsh on his father's side, surprised everybody except himself when he won the Welsh title in Cardiff last October, and the Celtic Manor berth that went with it.

"I'd been playing good golf for the two weeks leading up to the championship, I was just being held back by my short game. And it wasn't a flash in the pan either - I won the Gloucester & Somerset match-play event soon afterwards with a 64, that included 33 putts."

The appeal of the Assistants' Championship is obvious. "It took me until last October to get into a European Tour event. Now a win in the Powerade final (at The London Club in August) would get me into next year's PGA Championship at Wentworth."

Another vastly experienced entrant at Taunton Vale is Exeter's Chris Gill, who can look back wistfully on a prolonged PGA training period.

"I started in 2000, did my first year, put it on hold when I went out to Bangkok to play the Asian Tour. I came back in 2003, had to re-do that first year, then went out to Asia and played there 2005-06, and picked up my training again two years ago.

"I've now completed the course and am awaiting results. It's been a little bit like a rope round my neck for almost 10 years."

The Exeter 29-year-old joins Jones and 43 others, with the leading 15 finishers heading for The London Club's 54-hole final from August 12-14, where the winner pockets £5,000 and gains entry to next year's PGA Championship at Wentworth.
