Barnett’s 74 Becomes The Benchmark

Suddenly, Andrew Barnett's 74 this morning is looking extremely good.

As the wind and rain replaced yesterday's brilliant sunshine at Dundonald Links, the Welshman, bidding for the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship after two years as runner-up, will probably be sitting in his hotel wondering if an aggregate of 145 might even be leading at the close of play tonight.

While the scores ballooned and half a dozen players opted for 'retirement', occasioned by a variety of ailments, sodden players couldn't get away from the course fast enough after recording their scores.

Out at 7.25, Barnett starting at the 10th, somehow clambered to the turn in level par - quite an achievement in wild conditions - and only two dropped shots on the way home were testimony to his doggedness.

Overnight leader, James Whatley, was one of those who wasted little time in social chit-chat after signing for an 80. The card had a certain depressing neatness - four bogeys in each half.

Late starters James Lee and Jeremy Robinson are leading on three under par.
