Lomas Leads At Gleneagles

Joint overnight leader Jonathan Lomas is bidding to become the first English winner of the Gleneagles Scottish Championship since the Second World War.

Out among the early starters over the Centenary course he added a two-under 70 for an aggregate of 138, birdieing the last three holes. He leads by one from 2008 European Tour player, Craig Lee, at the halfway stage.

Lomas, the 41-year-old Ayrshire-based pro, whose claim to fame is he led the first round of the 1994 Open at Turnberry, will be hard to dislodge over the weekend.

"I'd love to get into this year's Open at Turnberry - I've actually joined the club there but of course it's been closed in preparation for the championship," he said.

Former champion, Gordon Law, reversed his number over the two days - a 67 following yesterday's 76 - to return the best score of the championship so far.

"And it could have been a few better; I missed three putts of around six feet, but mind you, I did hole a couple of monster putts."

Heather MacRae's stint in the championship is over - but she certainly enjoyed the experience and the publicity in the Scottish media.

"I know I didn't do myself justice today", she said after signing for a nine-over 81 for an aggregate of 156. "My driver, three-wood and rescue wood were all working spot-on, but I just didn't get the breaks, and my putting wasn't in the same class as yesterday."

The first-year PGA trainee intends to play in a few more Tartan Tour events with the men later this season, but in the short term she returns to earth tomorrow morning, manning the Gullane pro's shop at 6.45am.
