Campbell wins Surrey Open

Published in:

Ian Campbell produced a superb final round 67 to win the Surrey Open by one shot at Merrist Wood Golf Club.

Campbell's five-under-par effort left him 11-under after three rounds, a shot clear of James Ablett and Paul Creamer.

South Region Order of Merit leader Andrew Raitt finished tied for fourth with Alan Lovelace on nine-under.

Campbell started his second round on the back nine and after going out in level-par 36, moved into contention with four birdies in an inward 32.

The Brighton & Hove golfer's third and final round started with consecutive birdies and he went on to repeat his 32 on the front nine.

He dropped only one shot on the way back and further birdies at the 10th and 16th gave him victory.

"I putted much better than I have done all season," said Campbell, enjoying his first PGA South Region victory.

"It's my first PGA regional win so it's a big moment for me. I know I can win now so hopefully I can have a good finish to the season and move up the Order of Merit."

Campbell was 11th on the South Region Order of Merit before the event, but looks set to climb into the top five with his £2,000 winner's cheque.
