Walton Golf Centre professional Adrian Ambler moved to the top of the PGA Midland Region Winter Series Order of Merit following a superb victory over the PGA National at The Belfry yesterday.
Ambler, a former Winter Series champion, fired a 68 to claim his second tournament victory of this winter season - he won at The Forest of Arden last November - to join Cameron Clark at the head of the title chase.
Despite another bitterly cold day at the Belfry, Ambler made short work of the PGA National Course. Starting on the 15th hole, Ambler shot eight birdies including four on his closing four holes - a run which handed him victory by a single stroke over Clark and Paul Streeter who each shot 69s.
Had he not handed five shots back to the course, including a double-bogey on the 17th - his third - he might have been nudging the record books for the PGA National course.
Clark endured a torrid front nine, going out in three over par but, after completing the back nine in five under par, held on for a share of second place with Paul Streeter - and therefore the top spot in the table with Ambler, who previously won the winter series in 2008.
Craig Shave, the reigning Midland Order of Merit champion, finished fourth on 71.
