Austin Increases Lead

Devon PGA Order of Merit leader Barry Austin took full advantage of a favourable early start time to record another win in the medal at Churston.

The Downes Crediton PGA pro missed the worst of the wet weather and delayed donning his waterproof jacket until the eighth hole, having played the toughest part of the course in the dry.

Two of his four birdies came on the most difficult third and sixth holes, both lengthy par fours. His shot of the day was a slinging draw to the sixth green from 200 yards around overhanging trees to 25 feet.

He finished on two-under-par 68 for a one-shot win over back-to-form Ashley Moon (Okehampton) who competed as the rain and wind picked up during the afternoon when scoring became probably two shots harder.

Christian Vine (Axe Cliff), who enjoys the competition of Devon events when back home for the winter months from his summer base in Austria, was third on 70.

Nick Cook (Elfordleigh) and the consistent Neil Holman (Torbay DR) followed on 72 with David Curl (Tiverton) and Iain Parker (Royal North Devon) a shot further back.
