Sanders makes it a hat-trick

Home assistant Mark Sanders was always favourite to win the latest Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal on his home Knowle course and he obliged with the only sub-par round of the day.

The former European Tour player, who is now enjoying life working at the club where he played his early amateur golf, was so keen to win he made an early visit to the practice area.

He was a model of consistency and made a steady start with eight pars and a birdie at the par-three eighth. He grabbed his second two at the 15th before dropping a shot at the next. He got up and down at the final hole for his third birdie of the day for a one-under-par 68.

It was also his third victory in G&S PGA Medals this season when, for the first time in 2010, play was possible on two consecutive weeks.

Gareth Bennett (Cirencester) repeated his high finish of last year with a level par round of 69 for second spot, making five birdies.

Giuseppe Licata (Hambrook) whose card of 70 showed 17 pars and a solitary bogey at the sixth, was third.

Order of Merit leader George Ryall, playing in the European Senior Tour event in Brunei, was displaced by David Haines (Brean) who shared fourth with amateurs Charlie Cossins (Bath) and Paul Ryder (Filton) on 71.
