Repeat Win For Super Sanders

Mark Sanders repeated his success of the previous week by winning the Gloucester and Somerset PGA Medal at Stockwood Vale for his fourth success of the season.

As at Knowle, he was the only player to break par on a cold, dry, breezy day on a course used for the first time by the PGA, just a mile from his home on the outskirts of Bristol.

Stockwood's undulating terrain calls for some course knowledge to enable players to make a decent score and some found the tough going, despite sampling some of the best greens they have played on for a while.

Sanders started steadily on the shorter outward half and made his first birdie at the eighth. He dropped shots at the 11th, 12th and 14th - making birdies at 13 and 17 - before sinking a 30-foot putt at the last that proved to be the winning stroke.

He signed for a one-under 71, one better than Kevin Pitts who made his best return since switching from Woodspring to The Mendip at the end of last year.

It could have been even better had he not missed a six-foot birdie putt at the last.

This result moved Sanders to within striking distance of the leading trio in the Order of Merit. David Haines retained his slender lead without playing.

Gloucester and Somerset PGA captain Andrew March was three-under after 10 holes but finished badly. He carded 74, one better than Danny White (Players Club).
