Harper strikes a victory chord

Sidmouth's Kevin Harper made an immediate impact on his first outing in the Devon PGA medal series.

has played for the first time in the Devon PGA medals this winter and the former Euro Pro Tour No 1 has made an immediate impact.

The former PGA Europro Tour No 1 recorded his first win in his fifth event with a two-under-par 67 - four shots clear of Ashley Moon (Okehampton).

Despite dropping two early shots he made the first of his five birdies at the sixth and used a number of 2-irons off the tee to hit 15 greens in regulation.

Although he has played on the Challenge Tour for the last two seasons, he still feels that with the right breaks he could reach European Tour level before he is 30. But, for the moment, he has settled down to life as an assistant.

He said: "I am really enjoying the Devon pro events as it feels like playing in your own club. It reminds me of the great atmosphere we had in the county amateur scene."

Moon's round was a mix of great golf and schoolboy errors. It moved him up to second spot in the Order of Merit but this result means that Barry Austin (Downes Crediton) cannot now be caught. His 72 was enough to secure back-to back wins as Devon's No1 player in 2010.

Cliff Strange (Torquay), another player tied third has closed the gap on Neil Holman (Torbay) in the race for the seniors' OOM.

The other players to card 72 were Rob Selley (Teignmouth), Stuart Barrett (Dartmouth), Christian Vine (Axe Cliff), Ben Martin (Hele Park) and Mark Taylor (Exeter).
