Verchenova claims narrow lead

Russia's Maria Verchenova holds a one-stroke lead after a five-under-par 67 in the first round of the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco.

Spain's Paula Marti is four under alongside England's Melissa Reid, Scotland's Vikki Laing and Austria's Stefanie Michl.

Verchenova, 23, carded eight birdies and three bogeys in perfect scoring conditions at Royal Golf Anfa Mohammedia, near Casablanca.

"I was putting well and I was keeping myself fit through the whole winter and going to the gym and preparing to play so I felt I was going to be pretty close," said Verchenova.

"I'm hitting it longer and straighter so I supposed it helped."

Reid, who finished 16th at last week's Handa Women's Australian Open in Melbourne, carded five birdies and one bogey.

"I've put myself right in the tournament," she said. "I didn't hit it great out there today which was a bit disappointing, but hopefully if I get my driver going and get the irons good then it will go well over the next couple of days."
