Quite what Old Tom Morris would have made of the technology bleeping and flashing inside St Andrews Links Golf Academy is anybody's guess.
Technology in the old maestro's day amounted to no more than the upgrade of a hickory shaft or swapping of a feathered ball for a gutta-percha.
But at St Andrews Links Golf Academy they've taken technology to new heights and in the process provided a glimpse of coaching in the future with some of the most advanced ball-tracking, digital analysis and ultrasound putting scan systems available.
It's a heady cocktail of technology with plasma screens and computer displays giving a NASA space edge feel to the academy's four instruction studios.
Making sense of it all is Steve North, the academy's PGA Director of Instruction, and his team of instructors who work with players of all abilities from beginners right through to elite players.
Whatever the ability, no-one can fail to be anything but impressed by the sophisticated set-up that includes Dartfish video analysis, Trackman radar (used by the military for tracking ballistic missiles) and the SAM Putt Lab.
Collectively they chuck out more information about the swing and ball-striking than one could possibly imagine but in the hands of an expert pro it's useful data that can help improve a golfer's game.
North, a protg of Nick Faldo's legendary coach David Leadbetter, outlines how they use Dartfish in a normal lesson.
"At the start of a lesson we film the client from two angles and then sit down and discuss their swing in detail and prescribe changes needed," he explains.
"We'll then conduct various drills and exercises to make improvements and then film them again at the end of the session using split screen comparisons of the old and new swings."
If the e-Coaching option is employed, pupils receive back up support via the internet enabling North and his team to post a structured practice programme to follow from afar.
"eCoaching is terrific on a number of levels," adds North. "For example we can set up a training programme for the client which gives them a structured way to practise. Attached to the e-Coaching account are various tips and drills relevant to the individual golfer.
"An example of one of the tips from out extensive library is me playing bunker shots out of the Road Hole at the 17th.
"The other great thing is that they can keep referring back to us even if they live hundreds of miles away. They simply film their swing, upload it on the internet and we'll be able to see it, analyse it and fire it right back."
Another impressive part of the academy's armoury is Trackman which employs Doplar radar technology and tracks ball flight - measuring parameters such as height, speed, direction, spin rate and smash rate. It's accuracy is proven and has been used by the R&A and BBC at the Open Championship.
"Trackman's great advantage is that it produces tangible data to feed back to the client," says North.
"For example we can measure exactly how far and accurately a seven iron is hit at the start of a package of lessons and show them the differences after they've improved their swing."
The final piece of the technological jigsaw is the Sam Putt Lab which is an ultrasound scanning system, measuring up to 28 different parameters of a golfer's putting stroke. Data shows where the ball is struck, how far open the clubface is at impact, face rotation, speed and acceleration and swing duration plus much more.
The academy also boasts a specialised custom fit service operated by Applied Golf Technology and which includes a regional fitting station for PING Europe.
However if technology gives the academy an edge it's still the human touch that is most important to North and his PGA Golf Management team.
"Our approach is very much based on building a relationship with our clients to enable us to give them advice and tips to suit their game," he says.
"The technology enables us to deliver services such as e-Coaching to clients around the world but it is the one-to-one advice we can offer which is most valuable."
Open to golfers of all abilities, the academy is part of an extension of the existing St Andrews Links Golf Practice Centre which opened in 1993 with an additional 14 covered bays taking the total number of bays to 51.
