And so it all comes down, yet again, to a shoot out in Spain.
Hemingway would certainly have come out with a far more literary way of expressing this sort of ending, but unlike most of his shoot outs, here's hoping my story has a happy ending !
The past couple of weeks have been the usual waiting game, waiting to see if I'd get in, firstly in Portugal, then two weeks ago in Mallorca - I missed out on both by a hair's breadth.
As such, it was too late to take part in the Challenge Tour events, as I was hanging on till the last minute to see if I'd get into the fields on the main Tour. Frustration, disappointment and ultimately now means that flying out to Spain on Sunday a week or so earlier than I'd hoped for Q School.
However, I've got to look on the positive side - having to go to Jerez for the Second Round of Qualifying means that I'll have the opportunity to get into a rhythm and consistency which I can hopefully then take into Final Qualifying a week later, if I make it through Jerez.
It's a long time since I've had to play at this stage - for the past four or five years, I've gained exemption till Final Qualifying from my rankings on the Challenge Tour. This year, on the European Tour, I've missed out by some five places, and a few pennies over 4,000 euros, from going straight to the Final Stage of Q School again.
Like most of the season on the course, off it has also been a miss by the narrowest of margins - and I'm sure Ernest Hemingway would have had something equally philosophical to say about that as well!
So I've got to knuckle down, play as I know I can play, and who knows - I got my card through Q School last year, so I've been there, I know what it takes - hopefully, the experience will hold me in good stead again this year.
