Short Shots

22 June, 2009 | The PGA

PGA.info has tapped into its pool of pros to answer all your golfing questions - from technique and instruction through to fitness and the rules.

This week's question is on the short game and is answered by Kevin Flynn - a PGA professional at Tournerbury Golf Centre in Hampshire.

I'm never sure which type of short shot to play when I'm about 10-20ft off the green. Should I be chipping or pitching?

Kevin says:

In my opinion the shortest pitch shot you should be playing is about 15-20 yards. So the correct shot to play in this situation is a chip shot. It is important when only 10-20 ft off the green to get the ball rolling as soon as possible.

Correct set up for the chip shot is to position the ball back in the stance and always use the same ball position. If the ball position starts varying, the flight of the ball will start to vary and you will never be able to judge how far the ball will roll due to the change in trajectory.

The weight should be 65% on the left foot promoting a downward strike on the ball. Hands should always be positioned opposite the inside of the left leg - this again will create the same ball flight each shot.
