Following changes announced in 2011, the Titleist PGA Play-Offs field was extended to 24 and is also now the only route for PGA members to qualify for the BMW PGA Championship.
The new qualification criteria for Wentworth is a significant boost for the play offs with more opportunities for the 24-strong field which has been extended to include the Glenmuir PGA Professional champion and runner up plus the Powerade PGA Assistants' winner alongside the leading three players from each of the PGA's seven regional Order of Merits.
The changes mean the Glenmuir and Powerade Play-Off qualifiers will also have a tilt at earning spots in the several events on the European and Challenge Tours.
PGA Chief Executive Sandy Jones has signalled the play-offs as one of the most innovative and best events in the Association's national tournament schedule since they were first contested in 2006.
"As most football fans will testify, play-offs offer an incredibly exciting finale to a season and it's no different when our best golfers assemble for the PGA Play-Offs," he said.
"By holding play-offs we are ensuring the strongest regional players get the opportunity to gain starts into European Tour and Challenge Tour events and it is also a great opportunity for those PGA members who want to take their playing career to the highest level."
Historic Woodhall Spa, rated one of the best inland courses in the UK, hosted the inaugural event which was won by Gary Marks in 2006.
A year later Paul Streeter triumphed at Hollinwell while Scotland's Chris Doak stormed to success at Royal Liverpool in 2008. Michael Watson triumphed at Little Aston in 2009 with Tartan Tour No. 1 Greig Hutcheon victorious a year later at the same venue.
In 2011 Titleist, manufacturer of the world's No.1 golf ball, signed a three-year deal to sponsor the PGA Play-Offs with the tournament extended to 54-holes and set to be staged overseas for the first time at the PGA Sultan Course in Turkey.
