Fast nine: Dorset

The Dorset Golf and Country Club realised the benefit of nine-hole golf more than a decade ago – and set about completely altering the course layout to accommodate it.

Originally two 18s, The Dorset is now three nines – the Woodland, Lakeland and Parkland – all offering a unique challenge as well as a quick way to enjoy golf.

And that’s a big winner with members, according to PGA professional Stephen Packer, who said: “Outside of the golfers who roll up in the morning for 18 and competitions at weekends, I would say the majority of our members are nine-hole golfers.

“Everyone is more time conscious. It is not just golfers – we all are.

“But time is the biggest factor for people who play 18. When you ask them how their round was, they’ll always say something like ‘great – we only took 31/2 hours’.

“For the people who play nine, they know they are going to be around quickly.”
