Fast nine: West Lothian

West Lothian Golf Club embraced the whole concept of nine-hole golf so completely – they built an entirely new finishing hole.

The original course lay out left anyone completing nine holes around 600 yards from the clubhouse.

So club boss Alan Gibson came up with a plan to make half a round more convenient.

A new tee was built while a green on the kids’ par three course became the perfect finishing hole,

The new 9-hole layout has been available since August 2015 and Gibson insists it’s had a positive impact on the club.

Gibson said: “Everyone has embraced the idea – it has been well worth doing.

“For a very modest outlay we have created a great finishing hole and as a result, nine-hole rounds are growing in popularity.

“At this time of year particularly, with nights drawing in, there is just enough time for people to come down and get nine in.”

The club – which has panoramic views across the Firth of Forth – now holds nine-hole medals and is looking at specific nine hole memberships.

There is also the option for 27-hole packages with societies playing nine in the morning and the full 6,249 yard par 71 course in the afternoon.

“There will always be the diehard members who will only ever play 18,” Gibson added.

“But so many people these days only have time for nine holes and as a club we have to make golf as convenient as we can.”
