Alistairs Win Is Extra Special

Alistair Waddell won the PGA North Assistants' Championship for the Harold Lees Trophy at Dore & Totley despite dropping four shots on his opening four holes.

The Chorlton-cum-Hardy player ran up a triple bogey seven on the second then gave away another stroke on the fourth.

And he told himself: "It looked like another case of here we go again. I've not been very happy lately after bad breaks in the Leeds Cup and Manchester Open but it all came good today for the rest of the round and did not miss a green."

He steadied the ship with a birdie then added three more on the home stretch to finish on level par 72.
Hazel Grove's Benjamin Thompson matched his return only to be denied at the second play-off hole.

Waddell, 26, who has recently finished his second year as a trainee assistant, added: "I played in South Africa on a full Challenge Tour card but after a bit of a nightmare I returned home."

LEADING SCORES: 72 Alistair Waddell (Chorlton-cum-Hardy), Benjamin Thompson (Hazel Grove) Waddell won play-off); 73 Calum Hey (Shipley), William Webster (Cottingham); 74 William Hawksworth (Wortley), Elliott Lister (Halifax Bradley Hall), Alex Elliott (Stockport), Alex Pritchard (Poulton Park), Jason Dransfield (Heswall).
