Phil Archer atoned for last year’s defeat by Heswall’s Jason Dransfield by winning the Cheshire & North Wales Matchplay Championship at Wilmslow.

This time he swept to a 4&3 victory over Knutsford’s Tim Maxwell who in turn avenged his quarter-final loss to Dransfield 12 months ago.

Former European Tour professional Archer, who represents Poulton Park, edged into the final by despatching Ashton-on-Mersey’s Oliver Smith at the first play-off hole.

He admitted: “I got a bit lucky beating him in the semis because I was one behind after 17 but birdied the next two holes.”

Archer, who stood down from the tour to spend more time with his family, divides his time between playing and coaching at his club and Tour X Golf in Wigan.

“The classes are building up well and we’re heading in the right way,” he said.

And he revealed: “I’m hoping to be in the England team for the International Team Championships in Greece.”
