Bevan’S The Boyo At Swansea

Despite dropping his only shot on the final hole Jon Bevan won for the second time this season with a four-under-par round of 68 at Swansea Bay.

The Sherborne professional edged out his former Wessex Golf Centre colleague Michael Watson by one shot in an event well organised for the first time by home professional Lewis Jones.

He was out in 33 with birdies at the first and third and added three more on the 12th, 13th and 17th. Watson picked up three of his five birdies on the back nine as he maintained a successful run of two seconds following a win at Torquay.

Craig Melding (Neath) and Welsh seniors’ champion Martin Stimson (Ashburnham) were the leading Welshmen on 71. Melding made five birdies and Stimson two in a steady round.

Nick Ramshaw (Bristol and Clifton) finished fifth, his highest placing in his two seasons as an assistant, on level par 72, sharing with Sion Bebb (Morlais Castle) and Ashley Mansell (Clevedon).

Mansell’s five birdies helped Owen Money, Mathew Mittel and Roy Jones win the team award on 15-under-par 87. Ryan Haskell (Liam Bond Golf Academy), with Nigel Lovering, Keith Sawyer and Steve Baker finished second two shots behind.

Lee Corfield (Burnham and Berrow) with Ken Foard, Lorraine Donovan and Steve Redmore were third a further shot back.
