Jon Bevan raced to the top of the West money list with yet another accomplished display to win the Bovey Castle pro-am by three shots.

Sherborne teaching professional Bevan, now 50, showed maturity in plotting his way round the spectacular hotel course in six-under-par 64 leaving another veteran George Ryall (Burnham and Berrow) trailing in second.

It was his second win of the season following last month’s triumph at Cotswold Hills and his 12th Top Ten of his most successful season since he returned West after a spell at Rhos-on-Sea in Wales

Bevan, whose lasting claim to fame will be as captain of the PGA Cup winning team in California two years ago, took his season’s winnings beyond £6,000. A bogey at the second was hardly the ideal start but he followed with birdies at the third, fourth, seventh and eighth to be out in31.

A final birdie at the tenth followed by a dropped shot  preceded his eagle three at the 14th and five successive pars to finish.

Former European Seniors Tour winner Royall has also played consistently this year. He finished with a flourish  taking his birdie haul to five with the final three on 13, 14 and 17.

Richard O’Hanlon (St Kew) returned in three-under par to post 68 and claim third one shot ahead of Adam Frayne (Yelverton) whose mixed bag of a round included three bogeys, a double and six birdies including four in the  final four holes.

Scott Drummond and Michael Watson each signed for four birdies to share fifth on 72.

O'Hanlon led the winning team on 87, two better than Frayne with Chris Gill (Newquay) picking up the third cheque for 83.
