Cains And Portelli Share Spoils

Nick Cains (Swaffham) and Glen Portelli (Old Fold Manor) played some dazzling golf in finishing top of the pile at the Bishop’s Stortford.

The duo shot respective rounds of six-under-par – two better than Aaron Cox (Golf World Stansted) and Mark Talbott (Thorpe Hall)who tied for third place.

Morning starter Cains, who started at the tenth, blazed a trail with four birdies inside his opening seven holes.

He was six-under after 12 before a double-bogey threatened to undermine his challenge.

But he responded well to the setback, clawing back the strokes with birdies at his 15th and 16th.

Portelli was also 1 tenth-tee starter and he began with an extraordinary burst of scoring.

Birdies at his opening two holes followed by an eagle at the next saw him four-under.

Incredibly it got much better for Portelli just two holes later as he made a second eagle to lie six-under.

Understandably he wasn’t able to maintain that extraordinary level of scoring, making a bogey and a birdie in his remaining 12 holes.

Jack Winer (Abridge Golf & Country Club) followed his Order of Merit success at Bishop’s Stortford by heading up the winning team on a tally of 117.
