Great Britain & Ireland Captain Cameron Clark remains upbeat after watching his team narrowly lose the opening fourball session on the first morning of the 2019 PGA Cup at Barton Creek Resort in Austin, Texas.

Matthew Cort produced one of the standout performances of the morning session alongside debutant Jordan Godwin.

Leicestershire-based Cort picked up six birdies and hit an eagle at the par five eighth as the Great Britain & Ireland duo claimed a 5&4 victory.

“Matthew Cort was eight-under-par so that standard of golf is incredible,” said Clark. “Matthew Cort is a quality player. He knows how to get the job done so we knew he was going to be good. He’s so steady so he’s always going to make birdies.”

In the opening match, Scottish duo Paul O’Hara and Alastair Forsyth twice came from behind to claim half a point against Sean McCarty and Sean Berberian Jnr.

But it was the Americans who finished strongly by winning the final two matches to take a slender one-point lead into the afternoon foursomes.

“The golf was incredible,” added Clark. “I think match one they both shot ten-under-par better ball. There was a serious number of birdies made.

“A lot of the matches were very tight and could have gone either way. It’s going to be a tough couple of days for our team. The conditions were tough out there this morning but everyone looked like they were doing their job.

“We opened up with two debutants (Alastair & Paul O’Hara just to get them going. The thinking is that when it is your debut you want to get straight out and get playing as quickly as you can. Jordan (Godwin) did fantastic as well and Alastair and Paul picked up half a point which was really pleasing.

“We’ve gone really strong this afternoon. We’ve done a bit of work on foursomes so we think the side we’ve put out this afternoon can put us in control of this session.”
