Competing in Cooden Beach’s first Charity PGA Pro-Am, the PGA South’s Professionals also had the opportunity to warm up for the first Virgin Atlantic PGA South Order of Merit event in 2018.

With the PGA Southern Open Championship there on June 18th to 19th, on Monday David Copsey (DCGS Poult Wood) was the hottest with a four-under-par 68 for his third win in three weeks.

Copsey was obviously pleased with his form, as he explained: “I had some sessions with Ben Clayton over at Hankley Common over the winter, focusing on my swing and especially my putting and short game.  My game’s more consistent, my putting’s now making a big difference to my scores, and the results are speaking for themselves.”

After a shotgun start from the sixth, while dropping a couple of shots at the seventh and the 14th, Copsey deuced three of the four short holes at Cooden. He made a spectacular eagle at the par five 18th to leapfrog into the lead, and birdied the par five second to seal victory.

Picking up a handy £600, Copsey’s 68 edged out his Poult Wood colleague Craig Sutherland and Sittingbourne’s Peter Appleyard, who both shot 69s, while Ben St. John made 70 for fourth spot.  Cooden Beach’s own Paul Nessling was the only other player under par with 71.

Not content with the individual win, Copsey inspired his amateur team to victory as well, pushing Appleyard and his CK Group team into second spot.

111 PGA Professionals will tee it up at Cooden Beach on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 June for the PGA Southern Open Championship to kick off the race to be The PGA in England (South)’s number one, a place in the PGA Play-Offs at the end of the year and a share of the £12,500 prize fund on offer.
