Huw Williams

Huw Williams threatened to romp home in the first of five Titleist/Footjoy West Sprint Series tests for assistants and  professionals under 30 at Minehead and West Somerset.

The Pyle and Kenfig player started with three birdies, adding another on the sixth. But he was halted in his tracks by a double bogey six on the eighth. He added two further birdies on the way home but dropped a shot on the 12th.

This gave newcomer Joe Cruse a chance to win in his first assistants’ event. The St Enodoc man eventually turned professional this year after a distinguished amateur career in Cornwall.

He was able to match the leader by picking up shots at the second, third, 15th and 16th with his sole bogey on the fourth as the pair tied at the top on three-under-par 69.

Left-hander Matt Turner (Oake Manor) also made a swift start with three early birdies to claim third on 70.

Jess Bradley (Saunton) is in contention every time she plays. She carded five birdies in 71 to share fourth with Charlie Cossins  (Stockwood Vale) who bogeyed the tricky par three final hole.
