Sam Dodds wishes Coventry Golf Club would get more recognition as he prepares for the Galvin Green PGA Assistants' Championship Midlands qualifying round.

Dodds will be playing on home turf when he tees off at the event on June 1 looking for a return to the Assistants’ final.

But he does not feel the Coventry course always gets the credit it deserves.

It has staged the final in recent years along with a number of prestige events.

But Dodds, aged 27, thinks Coventry sometimes gets forgotten about.

“I go to events and if I mention Coventry Golf Club it doesn’t get much of a reaction,” said the final year PGA Assistant.

“I know I’m biased but I don’t think it always gets the reputation it deserves.

“You see clubs like Little Aston and Coventry is every bit as nice.

“It’s got a great history too, we had Phil Weaver as chairman of the PGA and the head professional there for years.

“It’s always good to play at your home club with home comforts, I’m lucky in that in that we have quite a few events there.

“It’s in great nick already and people always compliment us on that.

“The course is always exceptional, the green staff do a great job and it’s a very fair test of golf.

“You get what you deserve there. If you play well you’ll score well, if you don’t it’ll punish you. That’s why people enjoy it.”

This year’s £32,000 showpiece Assistants’ final is being held at Coxmoor Golf Club in Nottinghamshire between August 2-4.

“I’d like to get back there and have another go in the final, i didn’t do too well last year after squeezing through at Coventry last year.

“There’ll be another Coventry Assistant playing, Michael Antona, so we’ll be well represented, hopefully we can both get through.

“We usually get a good turnout of member supporting us so it should be a good day for the club.”
