First Win For Drummond

Scott Drummond won his first West pro-am of the season after an inspired opening nine on a difficult day for scoring at parched Bowood, the elite championship course in Wiltshire.

But the 2004 Wentworth PGA champion  from  Plymouth managed to hang on and share with in-form  Paul Hendriksen (Ivybridge) on two-under-par 70.

This was despite dropping two shots in a disappointing back nine after an opening four-under-par 32 which started with an eagle and contained three birdies.

Drummond ‘s last win was in the Celtic Manor 2010 celebration pro-am more than a year ago. Hendriksen, on the other hand, tasted success in the previous event at Remedy Oak after sharing third at Parkstone a few days earlier.

Hendriksen started with a birdie and added three more in carding two halves of 35. He won on his last appearance on the course in the Glenmuir PGA Championship West qualifier four years ago.

Richard O’Hanlon (St Kew) birdied the first two and final holes to claim third one shot behind.

Richard Dinsdale (Asbri Golf), Lee Thompson (Dudsbury) and PGA Cup player Nick Brennan, a former Bowood pro now representing the Tony Valentine Golf Centre, shared fourth on level par.

Thompson would have challenged at the top but for a triple bogey seven on the 16th. Brennan’s two-under 34 was the day’s best back nine.

There were new faces among the team winners.  Brennan’s trio won on 17-under-par 89 followed by home professional  Matthew Hacking  playing in his first West pro-am on 84 with-Kristian Mowatt and his Saunton team  one shot further back.
