THOUSANDS of PGA members across the world will be saddened to hear of the death of former Open Championship winner Roberto De Vicenzo who passed away at the age of 94.

An honorary member of the PGA since 1982, Roberto De Vincenzo finished runner-up at the Open once and placed third three times before finally getting his hands on the famous Claret Jug in 1967.

He won more than 230 professional tournaments across a 58-year playing career and will forever be remembered for his famous misfortune at the 1968 Masters.

The Argentine shot a final round score of 65 at Augusta and was setting himself up for a play-off against Bob Goalby, but his playing partner had put the wrong score on his card at the 17th. Instead of writing birdie three, Tommy Aaron marked down a four and he finished as runner-up.

Roberto De Vicenzo won many awards during his playing days including the Bob Jones Award in recognition of sportsmanship in golf, and in 1989 he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
