An initiative by PGA pros at Elsham Golf Club, Lincolnshire, to encourage girls to play golf has been described as the first of its kind in the country and hailed a massive success.

The Girls Golf Academy, which was launched earlier in the summer, culminated with more than 40 pupils from three local secondary schools taking part in the inaugural Girls Open, a Super 6s tournament staged on the front nine of the club’s main course.

The event was the final part to a summer of coaching for girls that Elsham had undertaken within the local community.

PGA Assistant Dane Duffin had previously coached five sessions in each of the schools followed by a sixth session back at the club. During this period golf was delivered to more than 400 girls with the majority experiencing the game for the first time.

The day itself began with an introduction then a group warm up on the practice ground where local trainer Amanda Wheatley put the girls through their paces.

The girls, in groups of six, then headed to their stations and with the help of several club volunteers the event was under way. An hour-and-a-half and six holes later the tournament had been won by Vale Academy Team 3.

The winners were presented with a trophy donated by the club’s Ladies Section and each team member received a golf club and Open Championship flag.

In addition, each participant was given an Open Championship hat, balls and tees courtesy of the Golf Foundation.

Commenting on his involvement in the tournament and hosting the coaching sessions Duffin said: “To be part of this event has been a real privilege and for this coaching model to be the first in the Country is a honour.

“To see the girls develop over the six sessions and enjoying themselves here at the club for this event makes me feel very satisfied. I look forward to continuing the work in our Girls Academy.”

David McNicholas, the head PGA Professional, added: “For Elsham to host an event like this shows how a traditional golf club is willing to open its doors and welcome in the next generation of golfers.

“Dane has done a great job working closely with the schools and the Golf Foundation. Hopefully the model used can be rolled out nationally to encourage more young people to try this great sport.

“Well done to all those involved and we look forward to hosting the event once again in 2018.”
