Neil Henderson has won only £879 this season from his campaigning on the Tartan Tour and the PGA EuroPro Tour.

But the Renaissance Club man's fortunes could be about to change as he leads the Highland Golf Links Pro-Am heading into the final round on Wednesday.

Henderson, who missed the cut on his last two outings on the PGA EuroPro Tour, leads the 54-hole event following two impressive opening round scores.

He started the competition on Monday with a three-under par 68 at Nairn, and followed that up with a three-under par 69 at Castle Stuart the following day to overtake in-form Paul O’Hara at the top of the leaderboard.

The classic Royal Dornoch links stands between Henderson and the biggest cheque of his pro career, with victory earning him a neat £8,000.

Henderson started both of his rounds perhaps tentatively with a bogey 6 at Castle Stuart's second hole and, on Monday, he had a couple of early bogeys at Nairn.

But both times he settled to come away strongly, birdieing the fifth, ninth, 12th and 18th at Castle Stuart in impressive halves of 35 and 34.

O’Hara led on Monday evening after an impressive opening round of 67 at Nairn, but he dropped two shots back after posting a level par score of 72 in his second round at Castle Stuart.

Three shots behind is Dunblane’s Neil Fenwick, who plays Nairn on Wednesday having finished on 72 at Castle Stuart and and 67 at Royal Dornoch, while Gareth Wright is on three-under par for the competition ahead of his final round at Castle Stuart.

It promises to be an exciting final day in the Highland Golf Links Pro-Am, which has a prize fund of £50,150 up for grabs. The winner takes home £8,000, the runner-up walks away with £6,500 and £5,000 goes to the third best finisher.

One other notable name in the field is PGA Cup-winning captain Albert MacKenzie. The likeable Head PGA Professional at Saunton recorded opening rounds of 75 and 79 but looked as though he was thoroughly enjoying every minute of being back out on three of the best links courses in the world of golf.
